Mauchline Ware Spool Holder “Abbotsford”

Late 1800's Mauchline ware spool holder featuring a transfer image of Abbotsford, the historic home of Sir Walter Scott in Scotland. The piece measures about 2" tall and 4" in diameter. It retains all of its bone eyelets, and the lid fits properly. Includes the wooden spools of thread.  There is a place for a thimble in the middle.

There is a burn mark on one side, possibly from a candle used during evening sewing sessions. (That's my imagination at work!) The mark adds character and does not affect the structure or function of the box. Overall, it is in very good condition.

Mauchline Ware is so named because it was produced in or near a small town called Mauchline in Scotland. It is made of sycamore and often had transfer photos of popular tourist destinations. It was produced from the mid 1800’s until 1933 when the last Mauchline Ware factory was destroyed by fire.
