Late 1800’s – Early 1900’s Uranium Glass Muffineer Sugar Shaker

Measures:  4” tall, 3.5” wide

This muffineer sugar shaker is crafted from vibrant multicolored uranium glass, which gives it a unique glow under a black light, surprise!! The multi-coloring is an unusual find, as most were a light shade of green.  This one is a mixture of pink, cream, and yellow/light green. The shaker has a brass screw-top lid, perfect for dusting sugar or spices.  The glass is in great condition with no chips or cracks.  The brass shaker top has a couple of splits on the threaded part and a slight indent on one side of the top, please see the photos.  Muffineer is a term used to describe a specific type of sugar shaker or sifter.  They were used in the 18th and 19th centuries to sprinkle powdered sugar on muffins, cakes, or other baked goods. Uranium glass muffineers were primarily made between the late 19th century and the early 20th century, roughly from the 1880s to the 1930s. Uranium glass itself was popular during the Victorian era and continued to be used in household items into the early 20th century.  The production of uranium glass declined for the most part due to the onset of WWII.  This is a unique find and an excellent conversation piece!
