Wonderful original 19th-century seed box from Chase Brothers & Woodward of Rochester, NY, dated 1873. This solid wooden display case was used to sell “Choice Vegetable Seeds” and features lithographed seed listings and advertising on the inside lid. The box is constructed with finger-jointed corners and includes three interior compartments with dividers (removable, though currently tight and not forced).
The original lithograph seed labels are glued to the inside lid—likely over previous year’s listings—with handwritten notes at the bottom edges. A small tack is placed in the back panel of the middle compartment, possibly used for pinning notices or price lists. The hinges are sturdy and functional, and the wood is solid with no cracks or breaks. Some scuffs, scratches, and age wear are visible as shown, all consistent with its age and use.
