1880-1900 Leonard’s Household Disinfectant Box

Measurees:  7” wide, 4.25” deep, 3.5” tall

The patina on this box drew me in and the label sold me!  Here’s what I can clearly read: “Warranted to destroy all unhealthy and obnoxious odors from cess pools, sinks, swill barrels, water closets, privy vaults, caspadores, stagnant water, damp cellars, stables, dog kennels, or any place where the atmosphere needs purifying.  Flies, vermin and bugs of all kinds will not stay where this is used.  No house or place of business should be without it as it brings health and comfort to all.”  And then the “Directions for Use:  A little scattered in or about the place needed, will eventually do the work in a very few minutes.”  Yikes!!!  And while I’ve heard that the world in general stank back in the day, I had never seen a nearly exhaustive list of the causes!  What a great conversation piece!!
