So excited to find this diary! The entries are short and to the point, as would be expected for the times. You really have to be patient and willing to decipher the handwriting and spelling to get to the core of the entry! The diary was found with the Mauchline Ware spool box which is also listed in the Shop. I've listed them separately so customers can purchase just the box or diary or both. The entries start on March 23, 1865. This was about 2 weeks before Lee’s surrender on April 9, 1865. Several of the entries are about where the soldier moved to and from, including exact times of day. In one entry he states he has been sick all day with dysentery. There is mention of a large fire in “Bufort”. He noted the date he enlisted (March 23), the date he went home (July 28) and the date he mustered out (August 21). After these entries, there are a few noting visits to family and friends in different towns, including one note on October 10, 1865, in which he states he went by his old home, “the plase where I was born”. **The pages are not all filled (entries start in March and are not daily after that) and as noted, the entries are brief, but this is a very interesting peek at one man’s life during and after the end of the Civil War. The diary is leather, in very good condition, as shown in the photos.
