1800s Hand-Painted Wooden Keepsake Box – Dovetailed with Inscription "Sophronia"

Measurements: 12" wide x 4.5" tall x 8" deep

This 1800s wooden box is a great example of early American craftsmanship. It features dovetailed corners, original square nails in the bottom, and hand-painted floral decoration with the name “Sophronia” on the lid—possibly indicating it was a wedding or keepsake box. The piece is hand crafted, and inside the lid is a faded pencil inscription that partially reads "Portland, Maine".

The box has plenty of character with surface wear, scratches, and chippy paint. There are scattered white paint drops on the top, and an old repair is visible along one side of the lid. The bottom has a large crack, but it is still very sturdy. The original latch and lock are present, but the key has gone missing over the years. This box is beautiful and functional—a wonderful place for storing jewelry, sewing notions, or other small items.
