1800’s Grain Painted Wooden Sewing Tape Measure with Cloth Tape

Measures:  1 inch round

This little tape measure is made of wood, it has a decorative finish known as “grain painting”.  This finish was usually seen on much larger items such as dressers, tables, and trunks.  It was meant to mimic the more expensive and sought after figured hardwoods such as tiger maple.  It's unusual to see it on such a small item!  The handle to reel the tape back in is made of brass.  The cloth tape is in wonderful condition and is clearly marked.  There is a chip on the upper rim of the tape measure, I have pictured this.  This is also where you can see that it is, in fact, made of wood.  What an interesting addition to a collection!
