Set of 2 Mauchline Ware Needle Cases

The smaller of these needle cases features a transfer scene titled “Ballachulish Ferry and Hotel" (see below). The larger piece does not have a transfer image but shows a natural burl grain on the end. These were likely made in the late 19th to early 20th century. The smaller case is sized for sewing needles, while the larger one may have been made for longer tools such as crochet hooks. Both cases open and close easily and are in very good condition with light wear consistent with age. Smaller case measures 3.5" long, larger case measures 5" long.

“Ballachulish Ferry and Hotel” refers to a historic crossing point in the Scottish Highlands at the entrance to Loch Leven, near the village of Ballachulish. Before a bridge was built in 1975, the ferry was an important route for travelers moving between Fort William and Glencoe. The nearby Ballachulish Hotel served as a stopping place for tourists and coach travelers in the 19th century, which is why the scene became popular for souvenirs like Mauchline ware.

Mauchline Ware is so named because it was produced in or near a small town called Mauchline in Scotland. It is made of sycamore and often had transfer photos of popular tourist destinations. It was produced from the mid 1800’s until 1933 when the last Mauchline Ware factory was destroyed by fire.
