Measures:  2.5” tall, 4” wide

The inside of this little box is in very good condition. The outside, however, shows signs of many years of use in the form of paper loss on the finish. There are 6 thread holes, two of them have bone eyelets in place.  Five of the thread holes have corresponding numbers above them. The top of the box notes the tartan design which is “McNaughton”.  The six spools of thread are included as is the sterling silver thimble. The thimble is a size 8, it is slightly out of round and has two punctures on one side. The thimble holder inside the box is lined with green silk velvet. This is in very good condition. The inside of the cover has an advertisement for Clark's ONT spool cotton. The label is nearly flawless.

Tartan ware was produced in the Scottish town of Mauchline from the early 1800s to 1933.  Tartan designs were applied to paper, via the machines, and then glued to small everyday objects made from local Sycamore wood.
