Wooden spools were used in the textile mills of the early to mid 1900’s. They are made of turned northern hardwood. This spool has a divot in one end, I have pictured this. I think it may have been a manufacturing defect, it has been worn smooth over the years. There is no paint on this spool, it is all natural wood.
