Vintage Italian Wooden Yarn Swift, Umbrella Style

Vintage wooden yarn swift with umbrella-style expanding arms, stamped “Made in Italy” on the base. Likely made around the 1960s–1980s, it is fully functional and opens smoothly by pressing down at the center hub under the top knob (see video). The wood has a warm, aged patina. No cracks or breaks observed. The smaller size makes it easy to use it's also great for display when not in use. Measures 12" tall, 5" diameter when closed, and approximately 21" diameter when fully opened.

Yarn swifts have been around for quite a long time. The basic concept dates back to at least the 18th century, when hand knitters and weavers needed a way to hold hanks (skeins) of yarn while winding them into balls. Early versions were often simple wooden frames or handheld reels, and they were used throughout Europe, especially in places with strong textile traditions like England, Germany, and Scandinavia.

The umbrella-style swift, like this one came a bit later.  These were more common in the 19th century.
