This beautiful sewing box has a wonderfully aged patina. The top lifts off to reveal 8 posts for thread spools. The thread eyelets are made of carved bone, one of them has a slight chip (front, 2nd from right). The “pin catch” drawer opens and closes easily. This sewing box was handmade, I would estimate around the 1880’s. There are some signs of age and use: There is a chip on the bottom right, a crack on the bottom right corner, and the cover has a very old break on one corner. Please look carefully at the photos. The pin cushion is (I believe) original. It is the most whimsical one I have seen yet! It is patterned with a tassel round the bottom. About half of the tassel has gone missing through the years. All of the finials are in place and without damage, which is unusual to see in a piece of this age. There is a piece of tape on the bottom of the cover which reads, “Mrs. John Boyce Grandmother of Mrs. Kate Tomey”. If only they had added a date! This sewing box has seen years of use and love, it would make a delightful addition to a vintage sewing collection!
