Early 1900's Mauchline ware wooden card box with floral decoration and a playing card motif (three of spades) on the lid. The box measures about 1.5" tall, 4.5" long, and 3.5" wide, and is in very good condition with bright color and only light surface wear.
Included is a complete 1930s Kan-U-Go word game, published by T.G. Porter (Printers) Ltd., Leeds, and distributed by L.G. Sloan Ltd., London. The set includes lettered cards, rule booklet, and an original crossword competition sheet dated February 28, 1938. Kan-U-Go is an early form of word-building play—similar in concept to Scrabble—where players form interlocking words in a crossword layout.
Mauchline Ware is so named because it was produced in or near a small town called Mauchline in Scotland. It is made of sycamore and often had transfer photos of popular tourist destinations. It was produced from the mid 1800’s until 1933 when the last Mauchline Ware factory was destroyed by fire.
