19th Century 3 Tier Sewing Box with Pin Cushion and Mirror
Measures: 9.5” tall, 9” wide, 6.5” deep
This beautiful sewing box was made by Malbon Watrous of Andover, CT who lived between 1822-1893. According to the Andover Historical Society, he operated a small toy shop in Andover. He also made salesman samples of household furniture. This sewing box is constructed of a dark hardwood with a burled quality. The end pieces are inlaid with a lighter wood. The thread holes are carved bone. Some of the finials are marine ivory. I can’t be sure, but I think some of the back finials may be a different material as they are a much lighter white. There is a mirror that pulls out right above the 2nd tier. It is very old but has no cracks or breaks. The mirror glass is “smoky” due to age, there is a layer of very fragile paper on the back of the mirror. The pin cushion on top is embroidered silk, skillfully done. I can't guarantee that this is the original pincushion, but it is very old. Inside there are 8 metal spool holders. The drawers and drawer knobs are in excellent condition. There is a small crack near the left front finial and a crack near the rear right finial, both on the bottom tier. There is a chip on the right rear corner of the second tier. This is an amazing survivor and a stunning piece of New England sewing history.
