Earlyl Pin Cushion, Scallop Shell with Velvet

This pin cushion was likely made as a gift.  The creation of pin cushions was a socially acceptable pastime for ladies over the past centuries.  These pin cushions were not always used for practical purposes as the sentimental value was more important than the need for use.  The velvet on this one has a nicely aged wear but only the one pin hole with a glass headed pin still in it.  There is one area of breakage evident near the hinge of the shell but this allows a view of the hand stitching on the inside!  Also, a different fabric was used out of sight, cotton I believe.  There are no tears on the velvet, overall this is in very good shape.
