Early Brass Sewing Bird with Original Pin Cushion
Made of a very heavy brass, the bird has a cross hatch design, the original pin cushion sits below the bird, the screw handle works well. There may be a very slight bend in the clamp, depending on the angle viewed. The spring to open the beak is in place and works very well. This is a very clean piece! The velvet pin cushion has little to no wear. I believe this is one of the earlier sewing birds based on the heft and design. The sewing bird was invented in the 19th century to assist ladies with their hand sewing. The fabric could be put into the bird's beak and there it would be held taut. The sewing machine had not yet come to be and having that third hand to hold fabric was a great help! Not long after, the sewing bird took a romantic turn. Young men began presenting their brides to be with a sewing bird months before the wedding so that she could sew the necessities for her trousseau.
