An Autumn Pair! #4 Shaker Box and ‘40’s – ‘50’s Ceramic Shoe Pincushion

The pairing of these two was a happy accident!  We were unloading some of my vintage finds on the shelves next to some of Rob’s finished boxes and voila! The perfect pair!

The shoe measures 6” long and 4” tall (that’s a 2” heel 😉)  It was made in occupied Japan which places it between 1945 and 1952.  It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks, the material on the cushion has no damage.  The finish has that fabulous crazing that comes with age.  It was apparently a souvenir from Plymouth, Mass!

This size #4 Shaker Box in a pumpkin milk paint finish is 8 ¾” Long by 6” wide by 3 ¼” tall.
A very nice size Shaker box to hold jewelry, loose change, keepsakes along with a multitude of other uses. Great for organizing kitchen and sewing supplies!

The sides of this box are constructed from maple and the top and bottom boards from quarter-sawn pine. Each swallowtail joint is individually hand-cut with a knife. Copper tacks secure both the bands and the top and bottom boards.

On painted and antiqued pieces the tacks are darkened to provide an aged appearance.  Per tradition the bottom of painted pieces are left unpainted, and are then dyed and oiled to provide an appearance of age.
