1880’s – 1910’s Mauchline Ware J&P Coats Thread Box with Original Thread, Never Used!

Measures:  2” tall, 5.5” wide, 3.5” deep

This thread box is as pristine as I have ever seen one. There are no chips or cracks. The hinges and the latch all work well. The label inside is in excellent condition. All of the thread is unused including the large skein of crochet cotton in the center.  The bottom is stamped “Made in Scotland“.  The photo is “Philadelphia, USN”.  This ship was launched in 1889 and stricken in 1926.

A great many cotton, thread and ribbon manufacturers—J & P Coates among them purchased Mauchline Ware containers for their products, their names discreetly displayed either inside the lid or on the base. By doing this, manufacturers transformed rather mundane accessories into attractive gifts!

Mauchline Ware is so named because it was produced in or near a small town called Mauchline in Scotland.  It is made of sycamore and often had transfer photos of popular tourist destinations.  It was produced from the mid 1800’s until 1933 when the last Mauchline Ware factory was destroyed by fire.
