1800’s Tiny Sugar Firkin

Measures:  7” to top of handle, 5” tall, 5.5” across bottom, 5” across top

This little firkin is unusual in that it still has the lid and the handle!  There doesn’t appear to be any damage, and the patina is amazing.  Some of the mustard paint is still on the lid.  “Sugar” has been hand carved and painted on the side.  And…..there are still granules of sugar in the crevices!

The firkin was originally a unit of measure not an object:  a firkin of whiskey, a firkin of sugar.  The unit of measure depended on the contents and the geographical area.  As time passed people began referring to the containers themselves as firkins.
