1800’s Remedies: Sweet Oil Bottle and Rich’s Canton Ginger Tin

Measures:  Tin – 6.5” x 4” x 2.25”, Bottle – 5” tall

So, if you had a cough or a digestive issue, these were the items you wanted on your shelf at home!  Rich’s Canton Ginger promises to be a delightful sweetmeat that aids digestion.  The tin is in good condition, there is some discoloration inside the tin but only a couple very small spots of rust. The outside has bold, eye catching yellow and black decoration.

The Sweet Oil bottle is very interesting.  The label is mostly intact as is the cork.  There is some residue in the bottom of the bottle.  The label tells us that it was “Put Up by Nathan Wood & Son of Portland, Maine”.  It claims to be the best remedy for cold, coughs, consumption, croup and all ailments of the throat and lungs.
