Where Have I Been Lately??
Well, I actually stepped outside of the state of Maine recently. Ok, it was a baby step… To Portsmouth, NH. It was a sourcing/learning trip. Of course, I did some antiquing, but we also visited Strawbery Banke (Yes, it is spelled correctly🙃). I was so enthralled that I didn’t take many photos… But they have a great website! This is a whole village of restored houses in their original locations with the earliest being built in 1695 and the newest in 1835! Best part? You can go inside! These photos are of the Abbott (my family name, a distant relation??) house and store built in 1720, year of interpretation: 1943. The war was on, and ration coupons were required!
The same day, we traveled just a few minutes out of Portsmouth to New Castle Island so that I could see The Wentworth by the Sea, a hotel built during the Gilded Age, in 1874. It did not disappoint; it was all I hoped for and then some! So glamorous!

In the summer, you can find antique shows all over the state. I love the show at Topsham Fairgrounds in June. This year it was warm and sunny! It’s interesting to chat with the dealers and see the wide variety of often hard to find antiques that they bring with them. I was an hour early and 2nd in line with my extra-large shopping bag, ready to deal!

Can you believe this chair was beside the road FREE? It was a bit rusty, and the seat was coming away from the frame, but I decided there was nothing that couldn’t be repaired and I had the truck that day soooo... I love the look and the heft of it. It likely dates to the 1920’s or thereabouts, it has earned its rust! And so, it lives on with a fresh coat of paint, a repaired seat and new friends!
My roadside prize!
The old is new again and pretty! Sophie is just pretty...
